Every Catalena hat starts as an open crown and a flat brim, and leaves the shop shaped for one head. Made in downtown Bryan, Texas since 1983.

1983
Chapter one · A magazine ad

Sammy and Carolyn Catalena had always wanted a custom hat shop of their own. Then a magazine ad turned up: a hatter in Florida was selling his equipment. Sammy drove out to take a look.

Chapter two · One condition

Custom work only.
Never sell out.

The owner would only sell to someone who kept the machines doing custom work. Sammy agreed, drove home, and drove back for the equipment. The doors on North Main Street opened in October 1983.

Chapter three · Today

Sons Scott and Travis work the shop alongside Sammy and Carolyn. Hats have gone out to nearly every continent, and each one is still blocked, creased and finished by hand.

The Gus crease was made famous by Lonesome Dove. Catalena Hatters was the first custom hatter to advertise and sell it, and it is still the style we shape most. Tall crown, sloped front, brim rolled to your liking.

Sammy Catalena is also a rancher and a PRCA stock contractor. He has watched hat fashion move from the urban cowboy years to the Gus, and he knows what a hat has to survive. That is the eye every hat here is shaped with.
